Wisconsin Dells Mountain Coaster
Experience the Thrill of Wisconsin’s New Mountain Coaster
In Wisconsin, riding a coaster in winter might seem impossible. However, the impossible has become possible with the new mountain coaster making its home in the Wisconsin Dells. Located off County Highway A and Bunker Road, the Wisconsin Dells Mountain Coaster allows riders to enjoy the amusement and thrills year-round, rain or snow!
General Engineering Company (GEC) is no stranger to unique and innovative projects in the Dells, and the mountain coaster was another opportunity for our team to think outside the box.
Our journey began with the survey team setting pins and creating a Certified Survey Map (CSM), combining five parcels into a 33+ acre site suitable for this thrilling attraction. The team mapped all proposed track locations, weaving the coaster’s path through the picturesque hills. However, this task was not without its challenges. Thick vegetation, including buckthorn and berry plants, added complexity, and the rolling hills made staking the track location a difficult task. However, our dedicated survey crew overcame these obstacles, laying the groundwork for the site design.
The civil team leaned into their out-of-the-box thinking for this project, ensuring the site design allowed space for a future phase II to accommodate additional parking. This foresight led to the design of a stormwater pond, with calculations that considered the potential parking expansion. Our team also designed the utility infrastructure, including stormwater and erosion control, sewer and water systems for the building, and the parking lot.
An additional turning lane was necessary on County Highway A, as it is a major thoroughfare for both local and tourist traffic. GEC’s team worked with Sauk County to secure the appropriate right-of-way and commercial driveway permits. The county’s Highway Commissioner approved the design for a right-hand bypass lane and left-turn lane to help manage the increased traffic.
A standout feature of the all-season coaster is its unique brake lever system, which allows riders to control their speed as they glide down the winding track. Gravity propels you through the coaster’s winding path, offering breathtaking views of the area’s rolling hills. In winter, riders will be treated to the sight of snow-covered landscapes. What sets this alpine coaster apart is its innovative step-on system, allowing easy access to the sleds. The elevated track, stretching 3,800 feet, promises an unforgettable ride experience! Onlookers can also enjoy watching riders race down the track from a designed patio.
With GEC’s expert engineering and a spectacular setting, this coaster offers a unique blend of excitement and scenic beauty, making it a new must-visit attraction in the Wisconsin Dells. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a nature lover, the Wisconsin Dells Mountain Coaster guarantees an exhilarating experience in every season.
Interesting Fact About the Site
When the Lake Delton dam broke in 2008, soil was taken from the mountain coaster site to rebuild the berm of Lake Delton.
