Retroreflectivity

Retroreflectivity TestingIn June 2014, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) required that all agencies (municipalities and other roadway management agencies) create and begin using an assessment or management method to maintain sign retroreflectivity. The FHWA has information on their Nighttime Visibility page to assist agencies with this new requirement.

General Engineering Company is able to provide our clients with the most efficient and reliable method of testing retroreflectivity with our retroreflectometer. This method allows for exact and consistent measurements to be taken of each sign during the day. Similar to a PASER rating for roads, the reflectometer provides objective retroreflectivity ratings for each and every sign in the community. With this device our professional staff is able to create a complete database of all signs in your community. Each color on each sign is tested in four places to ensure the most accurate reading of the sign’s retroreflectivity.

Retroreflectivity Database Includes:

  • Sign Location
  • Minimum & Maximum Readings
  • Type of Sign
  • Color(s)
  • Date of Reading

Additionally, GEC can also:

  • Provide a Google Earth spatial file or map of the measured sign locations
  • Incorporate sign program data into pre-existing GIS data
  • Sign photos
